While in Żagań, you must visit the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, located at 2 Plac Klasztorny in the heart of the town. Walking through the streets of Żagań, starting from the Ducal Palace and then the Market Square, you can easily reach this site.

The church makes a significant impression on visitors. It is a Roman Catholic church whose construction began in 1183 under the rule of the Piast Duke Bolesław I the Tall. The first written evidence of the church's existence is found in a document from Bishop Thomas II from 1272, which detailed the size of the Krosno and Żagań archpresbyteries.

The church underwent numerous renovations and expansions. In the second half of the 14th century, the Augustinian canons built a three-nave basilica on the site. After fires in 1472 and 1486, the church was rebuilt as a hall church. Over the centuries, an additional tower was added, along with the western peak, and the main nave was elevated. The church's interior now has a Gothic character.

We invite you to visit the church all year round, as it is open to both the faithful and tourists.
