In the very heart of the Lubusz region's gem - Łagów - lies the magical Castle of the Knights Hospitaller, an enchanting historical site that once served as the residence of the Maltese Order and is a priceless architectural monument in our province.
Located on the isthmus between the fabulously clear and forest-surrounded lakes Łagowskie and Trześniowskie, the Castle of the Knights Hospitaller invites visitors to explore its tower with a viewing point at the top. The castle also has a restaurant in the knight's hall mainly serving Old Polish cuisine and game dishes.
The castle also houses a hotel, and nearby one can find free parking and a restaurant serving delicious traditional Polish cuisine. We sampled the "placek po zbójnicku" and pork chop with potatoes, which were delicious!
Upon exiting the castle, there is the Church of Saint John the Baptist where wedding ceremonies often take place, followed by feasting at the castle itself, making for a unique experience in such a picturesque and fairy-tale location.
The castle is situated right by the lake with a newly built pier and recreational infrastructure including benches, piers, and platforms where you can rest and enjoy the view of the lake in the shade of oak trees.
In the Middle Ages, the Castle of the Knights Hospitaller was a significant point on the European map due to the strategic location of the Maltese Order headquarters and the fact that the pilgrimage route of the Way of Greater Poland (part of the Camino de Santiago to the Santiago de Compostela shrine) ran through Łagów. This route continues through Zielona Góra to the border in Frankfurt on the Oder. The distinctive marking of this trail (a yellow sun on a blue background) is visible in many places in Łagów and on the border bridge in Słubice on the German side.
We also invite you to read an article about Łagów Lubuski and its surroundings on odkryjlubuskie.online, where we describe, among other things, walking routes around the Ciecz and Łagowskie lakes, accompanied by our photographs.
